Managing Workers’ Compensation Expense & Exposure in Staffing

Human resources are both the product and service staffing firms provide.  Disabling injuries to temporary workers affect not only the employee: they limit the firm’s ability to serve its clients, diminishing revenue, while also imposing  a substantial financial exposure for increasing insurance experience-modification and higher premium. The COVID-19 pandemic presents an evolving concern to the industry. A panel consisting of a staffing safety expert, an insurance broker, and an attorney will provide  an overview on how firms can market their absorption of client financial exposures while minimizing their own.

The panel will address:

  1. Minimizing employee injuries at client locations.
  2. Internal workers compensation insurance compliance.
  3. Employee classifications and correcting related insurer errors that can increase costs.
  4. Negotiating risk transfer and liability avoidance via contract terms, employee waivers and WC Alternate Employer Endorsements.
  5. Evolving standards for joint employment under U.S. Dept. of Labor.
  6. How to monitor and extract best results from WC insurers and their claims departments.

The panel will be moderated by MSA Board Member and Corporate Secretary David O’Connor of O’Connor & Associates, LLC.

Aaron Lavespere of Brown & Brown, an insurance brokerage with a focus on staffing, will provide practical tips for getting the most of WC insurance programs.

Thomas Saylor, Regional Safety Manager for Aerotek, will speak to the staffing firm perspective on loss avoidance, DOL’s joint employment rules, and compliance with applicable OSHA/NIOSH  standards.
